Surabhi Gautam’s inspiring journey from a modest village in Madhya Pradesh to becoming an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer epitomizes determination, resilience, and academic brilliance.

Early Life and Education

Born in Amdara village, Madhya Pradesh, Surabhi was raised in a supportive joint family; her father served as a high school teacher, and her mother was a lawyer. 

She attended a Hindi-medium school in her village, where she consistently excelled academically, securing 93.4% in her Class 10 board examinations, with perfect scores in mathematics and science. 

Her academic prowess led her to clear the State Engineering Entrance Exam, after which she pursued a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree in Electronics and Communications at an engineering college in Bhopal. She graduated as a gold medalist and university topper, further highlighting her dedication to education. 

Overcoming Challenges

Transitioning from a Hindi-medium background, Surabhi initially faced challenges with English fluency. However, her unwavering determination enabled her to overcome this barrier, demonstrating that language should not be an impediment to success. 

Professional Achievements

Surabhi’s career is marked by a series of remarkable accomplishments:

  • UPSC Indian Engineering Services (IES) Examination 2013: She secured All India Rank 1, showcasing her technical expertise and commitment.
  • UPSC Civil Services Examination 2016: With thorough preparation, she achieved All India Rank 50 on her first attempt, earning her a place in the prestigious Indian Administrative Service.

Optional Subject and Strategy

Leveraging her engineering background, Surabhi chose Electrical Engineering as her optional subject for the UPSC Civil Services Examination. This strategic decision allowed her to utilize her academic strengths effectively, contributing significantly to her impressive performance. 

Public Speaking and Motivation

Beyond her professional duties, Surabhi shares her experiences and insights through public speaking engagements. Her TEDx talk, titled “How ‘SHE’ Became an IAS Officer,” has inspired many, shedding light on her journey and the challenges she overcame.
